ArtworksEkin Büyükşahin aka Ekinakis (b. 1985 Ankara), lives and works in Izmir. Ekin Büyükşahin graduated from Bilkent University Faculty of Music and Performing Arts, Viola Department in 2008. Her interest in visual arts, a heritage from her childhood but meanwhile kept in the background, has intensified since 2013, and the artist has concentrated on illustration and painting. Ekin Büyükşahin’s illustration and painting works, including mostly the use of acrylics, watercolors, and digital techniques, are being closely following in Turkey and abroad. Besides her illustrations published in several publications, the artist is also the author of a silent book titled The Man Who Likes Rain. Ekin Büyükşahin continues to work in her studio located in Urla. The main heroes of Ekin Büyükşahin’s visual universe are figures with which the audience can easily and directly connect, reflecting the simplicity preferred both in terms of emotions and also color and form. These adult figures, mostly lonely, sometimes melancholic, live in a universe that reflects themselves through their relations with an object, a place, or another figure similar to themselves. This character series derives principally from the relationship adults establish with their emotions. Thus, Ekin Büyükşahin’s recent works include suppression of emotions as the condition of being an adult and the arousing difficulties in communication between these adults.
